A guide to cleaning at university

As you prepare to head to University, it’s important to know that you’re well prepared for the year ahead. But whether you’re a fresher, or a seasoned pro, there is one thing that may not be at the forefront of your mind as the new term begins: Cleaning.

Keeping your University house clean will not only make your temporary home feel more comfortable and cosy, but it could also save you from serious health issues, potential bug infestations, and could be your saving grace when looking to get your deposit back at the end of the year.

Set up a cleaning rota – make sure to rotate!

Arranging a household cleaning rota will ensure that the most important jobs get done every week. Our advice would be to assign different people different rooms of the house and to rotate these jobs on a weekly basis so that everyone does their equal share. Don’t forget to add tasks like ‘taking the bins out’ – this can sometimes be easily overlooked.

Wipe up spills quickly

Spills and stains can be a nightmare to remove when left too long, and you always run the risk of causing extra damage if you use the wrong cleaning products. If you clean up any accidental spills as soon as they happen, they’ll be easier to remove and won’t result in any money being taken out of your deposit. The same goes for washing up plates, cutlery, pots, and pans. Just because it’s not your week to clean the kitchen doesn’t mean you can leave it all for someone else to do.

Don’t leave the big jobs until you leave

Some of the biggest cleaning jobs are often the costliest when it comes to deposit returns. Make sure that all bathroom grouting and the oven is clean as a whistle. It may be worth arranging to deep clean these once a month to avoid the stress when you move out.
Even with the best intentions, you may find that you need a little help here and there. Bristol-based cleaning company, Scrubbles, is on hand to help you, so get in touch if your University home could use a spruce up.
